Reward me as thou deem’st alright
If thou canst liken this deed,
To ruin so complete, indeed,
The void thou dost feel in the night,
If thou pretend’st thyself to save
When the descent begins to weigh,
After the same turn of the wave,
Thou didst feel the shove, so near, yet fey.
None, perhaps, as close as I,
Who spoke no false but dark decree;
Like me thou liest, in the sigh
Of wrinkled palms, ‘midst birds that prey.
For captains, thou dost know, have seen,
Through ages past, both fierce and keen,
But ne’er such fangs as mine displayed;
So close them up, let ‘em be stayed,
For in navigating wide and far,
One loses the end, the guiding star.
